The Washington Nationals and Stephen Strasburg have agreed to a long term extension. The 27 year old agreed to a seven year $175M contract locking him up until after his 14th season and his 34th birthday. This contract would be tied for the 6th biggest contract given to a pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball. The contract also included a potential opt out after the third or forth year.

The power right hander has a strong 3.06 ERA in 138 career starts all with the Nationals. Strasburg is considered one of the better young pitchers in the game, but his shine has faded some due to a long history of injuries included a torn UCL leading to Tommy John surgery. Even still, Strasburg has a 2.36 ERA and 47 strikeouts through 46 innings so far in 2016.
