According to CBSsports, the Philadelphia Eagles have just traded with the Cleveland Browns for the #2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. With the draft being a little over a week away, this is pretty big news. Not as big as a draft day trade, but this is the second time that Philadelphia has traded up in this year’s draft. After trading with the Miami Dolphins to go from the 13th to the 8th overall pick back in March, many thought that the Birds were eyeing running back Ezekiel Elliot, but now I don’t think that is the case.
I doubt that they would go up this far just to grab anything other than a quarterback that they believe can be the long term answer for the franchise. If the Rams hadn’t recently traded up for the #1 pick about a week ago, then I doubt we see Philly make this move. The offensive line class is deep enough to where they would’ve still been able to grab quality prospect Ronnie Stanley of Notre Dame. If the Rams take Jared Goff first (which they should) then I wholly expect the city of brotherly love to shine Wentz’s light in the sky and look to him to be the savior that Sam Bradford could never be (yet somehow Nick Foles was able to guide them to the playoffs?).Who knows, maybe they really like Bosa?
On the other hand Cleveland now has 5 more picks in this year’s draft. That totals 12 picks for Cleveland this year, tied for most in the draft. On paper, Cleveland wins this trade because they are lacking talent and depth on their roster. These extra picks gives them the chance to grab more bodies (and probably cut some careers short) to play on Sundays this upcoming season. Hey at least this means that the list of failed Cleveland QB’s isn’t going to get any longer this season right? Oh…right.
Anyways, our very own Max Weiner is our site’s expert in all things Philadelphia Eagles, so expect something from him in the near future.
